Program: Visual Storytelling through Comics & Graphic Novels
45 minutes K-grade 5 I offer this as a presentation to a large assembly or as a comics workshop for smaller groups (approx. < 60 students) [Comics workshop best suitable for grades 2 and up]
In my visit, I show the creative stages of making a graphic novel— from brainstorming story ideas to designing compelling characters. Students will learn how a manuscript goes from the initial sketches to final art. We will explore comics vocabulary such as panels and word balloons. I end the presentation with a step by step activity where students can draw along with me. My hope is to inspire students to write and draw in a fun and engaging way through visual storytelling and sequential art. This visit includes:
A look at writing a manuscript for a graphic novel
Discussion of comics vocabulary and how it is used in storytelling
the process from sketches to the printed book
A lively collaborative drawing game to make our very own comic

Program: Lunar New Year and Chinese Traditions
20 minutes Pre-K On my visit, I will read from my book, Happy Chinese New Year: A Festive Counting Story. We will learn how to simply count from 1-12 in Mandarin Chinese, and explore ways to celebrate Lunar New Year with Chinese traditions. I end with a drawing demo and game, along with crafts for students to engage with.
